Troubleshooting

Why am I unable to access my server on HOSTEX?

What is a virtual server?
A virtual server is a system in which a single machine will resolve multiple Domain Names. This allows a single machine to act as many separate systems. This way the expense and maintenance burden of hosting each website on a dedicated machine is eliminated.

How many hits can a virtual server support?
There is no clear answer to this question. Our virtual servers are designed to handle huge hit load (more than 200 hits per second). If your site requires even greater hit volume, please inform us, we will offer you a shared hosting.

How will my server be connected to the Internet?
Your virtual server is connected to the switch via Ethernet connection. The system is connected to the Internet via OC-3c/OC-12c-based multiple lines with total possible bandwidth up to 3 Gigabytes! There is no traffic level we can not accommodate!

How long does it take to register a domain name?
All .com, .net, and .org Internet domain names must be registered with Internet Domain Registrars. Our automated registration service takes just minutes of your time to reserve your domain name, which will then propagate worldwide throughout the Internet within a couple days.

Is there a support manual or online support resources?
Yes. Please view our Manual at http://www.hostex.net/manual/.

How can I contact HOSTEX staff?
Please, use our http://www.hostex.net/support/contact.html form or write an e-mail to support@hostex.net.

Is HOSTEX a reseller of any other virtual server provider?
No. We are an international IPP (Internet Presence Provider) company.

Are there any restrictions to the content I can put on my server?
Please read our Terms and Conditions page at http://www.hostex.net/start/terms.html.

Does HOSTEX take care of registering domain names for its customers?
When you order your virtual server on HOSTEX, we take the information you provide on our order form and automatically forward it to Internet Domain Registrars. They will then register your domain name for you, and bill you separately ($60 per two years) for that domain name. You can also register an unlimited number of additional domain names that you wish to point to your virtual server.

Do your servers support other than .com, .org, .net domain names?
Yes, it is possible to register these domain names and use them with our servers. However, please contact our staff for details about registering, changing nameservers and other info.

How can I order additional features for my server?
HOSTEX has introduced totally new ordering method – you can order or cancel any service any time. Use Control Center at http://www.hostex.net/login/. for this.

Why I should choose HOSTEX?
No technical traffic limits, 99.99% uptime, 24 hours per day service, "free to choose" service, low prices – you name it!

Does HOSTEX provide dial-up connections?
No, we do not provide dial-up access to the Internet. You will need an account with a local ISP in order to access the Internet.

How do I switch over from my current provider with the least amount of down time possible?
Switching over from another provider is no problem, and if done right can nearly eliminate downtime if you follow these easy steps:
Order a virtual server at HOSTEX. Transfer data from old site to new one.
Setup email addresses, CGI's, make any configurations necessary on your new virtual server.
Confirm that everything on your virtual server is fully operational.
Contact us for assistance in changing nameservers.
As soon as the domain name is pointed to your new site, (you will get confirmation from Internic) cancel services with your old provider.

  • 2) HOSTEX system will retrieve all information concerning your domain from InterNIC database and draft a letter to Network Solutions concerning the domain moving, this letter will be sent to you;
  • 3) resend this letter to Network Solutions. This should be done by you personally, because you are owner of the domain.

After that, InterNIC will update your domain information with new data. Now your domain is fully functional.

If you want to move other than .com, .net, .org domain - please just mark the checkbox and HOSTEX staff will contact you concerning further instructions. It can take some time, depending on how fast InterNIC updates its databases concerning your domain changes. It usually takes two days. There are no fees to move your domain to HOSTEX.

How can I access my new virtual server at HOSTEX before my domain is transferred?
You can access your server via any ftp client by IP address 92.61.40.131 with your login name and password. When your domain is transferred we recommend using its name instead of IP address, because the latter might be changing.

How can I check the content of my site before my domain is transferred and can I access it from the web?
If you are using Windows there is a way around to set a local DNS record. You can add a line (without quotes) "92.61.40.131 www.your_domain_name.com" to the file c:\windows\hosts. Sample file is installed at c:\windows\hosts.sam. You can copy or rename it to c:\windows\hosts and add the line specified above or a line "92.61.40.131 www.your_domain_name.com your_domain_name.com" if you want to use both names. When InterNIC updates your domain info please remove this line.

Can I use SSL encryption on my virtual server?
Yes, you can use SSL encryption on our virtual server. Please mark a coresponding checkbox when ordering services to use it. You can order or cancel this service any time at our Control Center. Important! This service does not start immediatly - it will be started only after you supply the SSL Certificate.

Our partner in obtaining SSL Certificates is Thawte. To get SSL Certificate you should go to page where you can get detailed description how to get Certificate. Some important information:

  • a) you have to purchase SSL Server Certificate
  • b) we operate mod_ssl secured Apache

Do I have shell privileges?
Yes, but we advise you to make all changes of your servers using HOSTEX Control Center or through FTP access.

How do I get my web page statistics?
As administrator of your server, you will have full access to the log files on your server. You can order statistics program Webalizer for easy analyses of these logs. Statistics would be accessed at <www.yourdomain.com/webalizer>.

Can I use CGI's?
Yes, CGI can be ordered as standard service any time.

Can I use Perl?
Yes, Perl 5 can be ordered as standard service at any time. The path is /usr/bin/perl

Does HOSTEX support PHP Base Library?
Yes. You can order HOSTEX's PHP and Database Support services to use it. PHP Base Library should be installed by yourself.

Refer to HOSTEX manual concerning installation process.

What is my POP3 server name to get my mail?
The POP3 server name of your mail is the same as your general server name. For example, if you need to get mail from "myserver.com", just fill the "POP3 server" form in your mailer with "myserver.com".

Why am I unable to check my POP3 account?
When you order a mailbox HOSTEX system generates it automatically - something like ab00nn. You have to create a mailbox alias (info@myserver.com) to use you mailbox, but the generated name (i.e. ab00nn) remains as login. Your incoming and outgoing mail server for your mailbox at HOSTEX is your registered domain name at HOSTEX (myserver.com). You can also use other outgoing mail server if your ISP provider lets you do so.

Why am I unable to access my server on HOSTEX?
This could happen if you previously hosted your domain with other hosting provider. Your former services provider did not remove DNS records of your domain from it's servers. In this case old DNS servers point to your old server that no longer exists.
Try to ping your server and if response comes from 92.61.40.131 then it is your HOSTEX account. If not - you are trying to access your old server. You should inform your former provider about this problem, it takes not more than five minutes to correct it.
